When Nina Rosenblum told me about the letters — written by her father Walter Rosenblum to his wife from the front, recovered decades later — I understood that this film wasn't about history at a distance. It was about a man who had been there. Who had looked through a lens at D-Day, at the liberation of Paris, at Dachau, and had tried to hold what he saw.

My approach has always been the same: distill everything down to a pure emotion. Remove what isn't necessary until what remains is true.
